The first annual Derby Day LA presented by Woodford Reserve was held on May 7 at Saddlerock Ranch’s Oak Grove in the breathtaking setting of the Malibu mountains.
To celebrate the “run for the roses,” Derby Day LA brought the “South” to Southern California for the ultimate Kentucky Derby experience, providing a fun alternative to experiencing the iconic annual race at Churchill Downs.
Over 400 guests attended the fashion, flair and excitement of the day while enjoying a premium open bar featuring Woodford Reserve, Don Julio, and Peroni beverages, in addition to live music, up to the minute race coverage, fashion contests, social media activation, gourmet Southern comfort food, and more. Additional sponsors included VOSS Water, Van Nuys Jeep and Los Angeles Magazine.
Celebrity attendees included Camille Grammer (Real Housewives of Beverly Hills), James Anderson (New Orleans Saints), Dennis Haskins (Saved By The Bell), Carissa Rosario (Model), Leslie Kirkland (Big Rich Texas), Jasmine Dustin (Being Mary Jane) and DJ Rich Rubin (KROQ).
Guests sampled refreshing mint juleps, took photos with horses surrounded by mountain setting, and enjoyed music by local bluegrass band The Get Down Boys and a live DJ. While not part of the event, the grounds house a petting zoo with camels, zebras and a very friend giraffe named Stanley.
At 3:30 PM, the group gathered together to watch the big race on an oversized LED board, in addition to HDTVs throughout the property.
A portion of ticket sales proceeds benefitted both Canter California, an organization dedicated to transitioning thoroughbred racehorses off the track into new careers, and RideOn, a charity that teaches adaptive horseback riding to children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities.
The first annual Derby Day LA is definitely off to a great start. Looking forward to next year’s event.
